Unique - impressive - rugged - beautiful - majestic!

These are just a few of the words applied to describe Spøttrup Castle since it was restored and established as a museum in 1941. Today Spøttrup Castle appears as Denmark?s best preserved medieval castle. In a miraculous way it has survived a stormy life for centuries with different owners treating the castle with shifting attitudes towards preserving this unique place.

The castle gives an impression of the defensive building style of Middle Ages. To create a strong castle was of primary importance ? whether the dwelling was comfortable to live in was of secondary importance. Spøttrup Castle Museum shows how people lived at the rugged, but also beautiful medieval castle. Holes for the canons to defend the castle have been preserved, and the nine famous medieval toilet shafts on the walls of the castle stand as witness to the everyday life 500 years ago.

In the closest surroundings of Spøttrup you will for instance see the lake Spøttrup Sø with its rich animal and bird life. A path system leads round the lake, and there are a bird tower and an exhibition which describes the lake and its animal life. At the castle you will find a beautiful park which is always worth a visit due to its rose garden and medical and herbal plants.

Every year Spøttrup Castle Museum offers a wide range of activities from music and exhibitions to theatre and market days.

Outside opening hours the castle can be opened for groups according to agreement.

Besides, the Traktørstedet Borgen, which offers coffee and pastry, lunch and dinner menus in a cosy and historical environment, is situated at the museum.
Bus from Skive stops at the castle.

Staarup Hovedgaard is the only privately owned manor house of this region which is open to the public. The historically preserved main building was built in 1554 and constructed over medieval cellars from the 1300s. The old manor house is situated on large castle mounds surrounded by a water filled moat.

The main building is arranged as a private manor house home with unique interiors which make the manor house history come alive throughout more than 600 years. In the vaulted cellars, you will be back in the Middle Ages, in the large banquet hall you will experience the Renaissance, and in the many other rooms of the house you will encounter the Baroque and the French Empire lifestyles.

The main building and the port house form the fascinating framework for this region?s large sales exhibition of antiquities, ancient art, and classical household goods. Collections in the main building comprise furniture, paintings, chandeliers, genuine oriental carpets, old clocks, and small antiquities from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The port house offers a wide range of classical household goods, peasant furniture, textiles and thousands of small things.

All children from 7-13 are invited to participate in an exciting ghost hunt where they are to find the white lady of the manor house. There is a lottery for money and book prizes several times throughout the year.

Krabbesholm

The main building of Krabbesholm is a listed building. It was erected in the years 1550 to 1560, and its exterior structure is remarkably well preserved.

The one metre thick double walls are made of bevelled fieldstones and medieaval large bricks which most  probably come from one of the many churches that were demolished during the Reformation.

The interior decoration of Krabbesholm is well preserved as well, especially the wall paintings of the banqueting hall from 1759 made by the artist O.V. Wassman.

Today Krabbesholm is an international school of Art, Photography, Architecture, Design, and Graphic Design. There is no public admittance except to the park.
